All about Dovatu

Dovatu is a turn of speech, an exclamation used by speakers of an Italian dialect, hybrid between Furlan and Venetian, a tight spread
in an area that encompasses both sides of the river Tagliamento, in the last kilometers of its course towards the sea.

Dovatu echoes particularly in Bibione, Lignano, San Michele, Latisana, Fossalta and Portogruaro, locations next to
the mouth of the important river. It feels sometimes even higher, going up the river a few kilometers
(Tiliment in Furlan, Tajamento in Venetian), in Cordovado, San Vito, Varmo and Codroipo.

It is, therefore, a synthesis of two cultures, friulan and venetan, often more distinct in appearance than in concrete analogies.

It is, as its land, a genuine idiom: borrowed from the friulan “dulà vatu?”, matches “where are you going?”.

This interrogative phrase often takes a deeper meaning, suggestive, even irreverent: “where are you going” implies
a critical review and expressed ironic, even humorous, on the choices made and the ideas given.

It is often accompanied by a typical gesture of Italianity: rocking the hand facing up, combining
all the fingers, fingers picked bunch. A gesture that introduces doubt.

This is the web expression of Dovatu, opinion journal, where news and events are interwoven with reflections and inquiries.
